An Open letter To The Onion's Editor, Joe Randazzo: Your Diabetes Post Was A #MAJOR FAIL

Dear Joe –

My name is Kelly Kunik, and I'm a person with type 1 diabetes, who is a Diabetes Blogger/ Advocate & Living with Diabetes expert.

I’m also the daughter, sister, niece, aunt, & friend of many people with diabetes.

I’m writing to let you know that I (and tens of thousands of other) found the post that was published in the November 5th, 2010 edition of The Onion and titled: Group of Children with Diabetes All Die One Day After hearing Jay Cutler Speak;

offensive, unfunny, disgusting, and insensitive on every level imaginable.

Yeah, BIG MISTAKE & MAJOR FAIL.

It takes a lot to offend me, because honestly, my humor runs along the lines of that of a 14 year old boy most of the time.

And while I’ve often laughed (and tweeted and facebooked) your editorials in the past because I've always been an Onion fan - this post is not funny on any level.

I use humor to handle everything in life, including my own diabetes, but your post made me so angry that I could barely speak, let alone type.

To put it bluntly: WHAT THE HELL POSSESSED YOU TO PUBLISH THAT PIECE OF TRASH!

Seriously Joe, do you have any idea what it actually feels to lose a loved one to diabetes? Do you have a clue as to how many people in the world have lost loved ones to diabetes? Yeah, I didn’t think so. So how the hell do you have the nerve to joke about that, let alone put it in print?

Forget for a moment that November is National Diabetes Month, and November 14th is World Diabetes Day, and that many of us in the Diabetes On-line community (and off) use this month, (not to mention the other 11) to teach others about diabetes. We spend 365 days a year busting diabetes myths that perpetuate diabetes stereotypes, and donate millions to find a cure. We never get a vacation from diabetes, or time off for good behavior. And we never, ever get a break from people who only believe the diabetes stereotypes.

Forget the fact that losing someone you love to a disease is hard enough, but losing someone you love to a disease that is both misunderstood & is often the butt of jokes is horrible on levels you can’t even begin to imagine.

And forget the fact that it wasn't even a funny article, diabetes or not!

Are you aware that people often blame the person with diabetes for their disease, instead of blaming diabetes?

And did you know that blaming the person with diabetes often results in not only PWDS (person (s) with diabetes) blaming themselves?

And that John and Jane Q. Public putting the blaming o n those with diabetes directly affects diabetes fundraising efforts bottom line?

No, of course you didn't!

Here’s the thing, I don’t find anyone dying from diabetes funny, children or otherwise.

In part because I am a person with type 1 diabetes and lost my father, sister & two aunts to type 1 diabetes.

In part because I have also lost friends to diabetes, and I have friends who have lost their young children and other family members to both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

And they aren’t laughing at all Joe, not one bit! Their worlds are rocked and the pain of their loss is their constant shadow and companion.

And the siblings of children and adults who die from diabetes, well they aren't laughing either Joe.

There's a hole in their heart that can never be filled and their burden is heavy.

Like Atlas, the siblings who have lost a brother or sister to diabetes carry the weight of their loss and their parents grief on their shoulders.

Joe, did you know that parents of children with diabetes don’t sleep most nights, because they get up to take their child’s blood sugars every 2 or 3 hours around the clock? Yep, true fact. These parents are meticulous when it comes to food, insulin, meds, gluten free options, and the likes there of.

They become diabetes strategists and warriors, as do their children.

The say no to their children when they really want to say yes, but can’t.

Parents of children with diabetes spend a lot of time worrying about their children.

And children with diabetes spend a lot of time worrying about the effects that their disease has on not just themselves, but their parents.

We see our parents worry and we worry for them. We see them get angry at the disease, and some times we miss interpret that anger towards diabetes, as them being angry with us.

And we try to ease their pain, as well as our own.

Personally, my own father never got over losing my sister. Her death became his before and after mark for everything else that happened in his life. And I believe that watching her die took years of his life and my mom's.

And 20 years after the fact, my mom has told me time and again, that there’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t think about my sister and that she misses her so much that her heart actually hurts -and "that you never get over the loss of a child.'

So yes Joe, as much as I love to laugh and joke about diabetes and do so every chance I get -

I find nothing funny about joking about children with diabetes dying.

Especially since our diabetes on-line community has lost one adult and three thirteen-year-old children to dead-in bed –syndrome since February 2010, with the the most recent child passing away two weeks ago.

So The Onion’s post not only sucks and is hurtful, but your timing is shitty!

A friend of mine who is one of the funniest guys I know, said it best this past Friday, when he wrote to tell me that a person he worked with, had just lost his 41 year old wife that afternoon to type 1 diabetes complications: “ Kelly, I don't think I ever looked at diabetes as being a disease that had the ability to end a life so quickly. I'm sorry for my ignorance.”

His words from the heart spoke volumes.

Next time, before you and your staff at The Onion go for the cheap, death from diabetes joke, take the time to actually learn the facts about the disease and the people with diabetes that you are raking over the coals.

Sincerely,

Kelly Kunik

Why is homeopathy increasingly popular? Well, there are many reason. The core reason is that homeopathy is both safe to use, and (with the right remedy) effective with any ailment or disease. In fact, an increasing number of people are buying over-the-counter remedies, as this article shows. And this brings in a third reason - homeopathy is not expensive.

Homeopathy cures where Allopathy fails. Are you being treated with conventional medicine, have been for years, and you are no better? Many people turn to homeopathy at this point of their lives.....

Homeopathy is helpful for a whole range of conditions - read these articles

Homeopathy and the treatment of women during Menopause. Look at this article, to see why homeopathy is both safer, and more effective than conventional treatment - especially HRT treatment.

Homeopathy and Bedwetting. This article explains the background to the problem, and provides information on some of the remedies that can be used for the condition.

And for incontinence more generally, a wider approach can be found here.

Homeopathy and Claustrophobia.

Homeopathy and Influenza (flu).

Homeopathy and Epilepsy - a personal story.

Homeopathy, digestion and constipation. Another personal story.

And some practical thoughts on practising homeopathy with animals.

Blockages in Homeopathy. Have you ever wondered why homeopathic remedies do not always work? The concept of 'blockage' is widely discussed within the homeopathic community, and is usefully explained in this article.

And finally, an interview with two of homeopathy's living greats - first, Robin Murphy. And second, Miranda Castro (and in particular the cream she uses for scars and keloids). Find out in these two articles just what learning, expertise, experience and thought goes into the homeopathy profession.

The Failure of Conventional Medicine (3)

The Failure of Conventional Medicine (3)
The dishonesty of the Conventional Medical Establishment is not widely appreciated or understood. Doctors (GPs) are usually found to be one of the most trusted professions, surely they would not intentionally give us drugs that cause disease and death - would they?

Indeed, most would not, but unfortunately they are at the very end of a long trail of corruption, deceit, and dishonesty that can be found in the following internet articles - although, of course, the mainstream media refuse to report them to us.

How the medical monopoly hides inconvenient vaccines truths is a good place to start.
What is not reported in the media is as important as what is reported. And what has become clear to me over the last few years is that the mainstream media is not interested in providing us with any evidence that runs counter to what ConMed wants us to know.

Media control is highly valued by Big Pharma and other monopolistic cartels. Since the 1970s, centralized media ownership, CIA intervention, and federally sanctioned pharmaceutical advertising have made owning the media easier for Big Pharma.

As Dr Mercola says in this article, for over a century Big Pharma have created and enjoyed a lucrative monopoly in health care. And they have done it by forming alliances with doctors, politicians, and scientists both within and outside government. So it is not just a medical monopoly we fight - it is a government sponsored monopoly. So what happens when people begin to refuse to 'take the medicine'? Government seeks to force them on us. And in doing so, they take our medical liberties away from us, and force medication on us.

The Media speaks for Big Pharma. Well, it certainly does not speak up for patients. Statin drugs are now known to cause many disease-inducing-effects (DIEs), yet the Media not only refuses to tell us about this, they continue to tell us how good they are - now, apparently, they protect us from Prostate Cancer! The mainstream media have become publicists for BigPharma - propagandists who are willing to publish ConMed news releases without comment or criticism - and fearful of printing the truth.

The reason for the silence of Government and the Media is that Big Pharma is very profitable.  The huge profits made from selling drugs are used to ensure that little of nothing is known about the dangers of these drugs. We, and patients throughout the world, are meant to be no more than consumers.

The 'Occupy' movements throughout the world, including at St Paul's in London, are campaigning against the power of Big Corporations, and the influence they have on our daily lives. This video explains why Big Pharma companies are probably the most dangerous of these big corporate groups - threatening not only our health, but increasingly, our health liberties. Whilst banking may be the focus of media attention, it is Big Pharma that has control of our government, and is making enforced medication an ever-increasing possibility.

And Big Pharma does not just want to sell their drugs to you - they want to stop you having access to homeopathy (and any other alternative medical therapy) too. Just look at this article, from the GP magazine, to see how Boots in being attacked by ConMed apologists! The movement to stop us getting access to vitamins and supplements is now operational throughout the world. The monopoly wishes to extend its monopoly.

So let's now have a look at some of the articles about what we are not being told about the health services offered to us by Big Pharma, ConMed, the NHS - and our doctors.

On blood pressure, or hypertension drugs? Then look at this video.

Did you know that overdosing on painkilling drugs have tripled in 10 years?

Has anyone told you that Contraceptive pills are linked to breast cancer?

Recently, we have had 'breast cancer awareness week' - but this article tells you of a darker side. And a more positive side which you are less likely to hear about. Guess which side Big Pharma prescription drugs lay on!

And Antibiotics? Contrary to what we have been told for over 50 years, antibiotics are not all they have said to be (and this is a fairly mild critique)

And has anyone told you that routine hospital treatments can cause heart attacks?

And if you have heart disease, it seems best to steer clear of drugs ConMed gives you to treat it. Especially, it would seem, if you are a dog!

The evidence against vaccines is growing by the day, although you won't realise this if you obtain your information from the mainstream media. The Greater Good is a long video that seeks to take a 'balanced' view of vaccination. If you are thinking of taking, or allowing your children to take any form of vaccines, please, please look at this first!

And so it goes on, a medical monopoly, out of control, but in control of governments and politicians, a monopoly that has little or nothing to do with good health. We are not well-served by this medical monopoly, or its complacent allies in Government and the mainstream Media.

If you are concerned about this situation, ensure you see next weeks edition of this newsletter, when more evidence from the internet will be brought together and revealed. Better still, why not subscribe to this blog, and get an email each week to let you know when it has been published.

The Failure of Conventional Medicine

BBC News supports drug taking (Ritalin) to enhance work performance!

BBC News supports drug taking (Ritalin) to enhance work performance!
BBC News appears to support drug taking! I have said before that the BBC rarely report evidence of the harm and damage Pharmaceutical drugs do to patients, or news about the fraud and corruption of the Big Pharma companies. I have also commented, many times, on their willingness to report the 'medical breakthroughs' reported to them by the Conventional Medical Establishment, without questioning them about the safety of these so-called 'breakthroughs' - which never seem to materialise!

Listening to BBC News would make it appear that all was well with the conventional medical world, and that all we have to do, as patients is to 'keep on taking the pills'.

But this morning, BBC News sank to new depths. In their flagship Radio 4 'Today' programme they discussed a wonderful idea. We could all be taking drugs in order to increase our mental and intellectual performance at work. Employers, and even employees, might even feel it necessary to take these drugs.

Lance Armstrong has just been stripped of 7 Tour de France victories because he took drugs to 'enhance' his performance. Yet, according to the BBC Today programme, it is okay to take so-called 'Mind Enhancing' drugs to improve our performance at work!

And just what drugs does BBC News suggest we should be taking to assist our work performance? The suggestion was ADHD drugs, including Ritalin.

Now, the question arises, is BBC News just ignorant about the disease-inducing-effects (DIEs) of Ritalin? Or are they taking their role as 'sales representative' for the Big Pharma industry more seriously than I have previously thought? Either way, it is unacceptable for a public service broadcaster.

So here is something I have published about Ritalin - in the vain hope, perhaps, that someone at BBC News will bother to read it, and understand that people are suffering out here because too many people are taking this drug that appears to have the support of the BBC.

"Ritalin is an amphetamine drug used unsparingly for children with ADHD. But other costly and long-acting medications Concerta, Strattera, and Adderral and also used. Some statistics about the rise in the use of this and similar drugs to treat hyperactivity in children shows the soaring sales figures (figures taken from a Reuters news article, 6 March 2007 (http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN0644846620070307?pageNumber=1), and a BBC News article on 7th March 2007 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/1/hi/health/6425977.stm).
In the USA between 1993 and 2003, prescriptions of ADHD medications, including Ritalin, almost tripled (274%), with one in 25 children and adolescents in the USA now taking drugs for the condition

Global spending on ADHD drugs increased nine-fold, with 83% occurring in the USA

In the UK, use of the drugs grew by 12.3% between 1999 and 2003 and expenditure grew by 30.8%. Monthly prescriptions for Ritalin increased from just 4000 in 1994 to 359,000 in 2004.

In 2000, NICE estimated there are around 400,000 under 16-year olds with ADHD in England and Wales. Richard Scheffler, an expert in health economics and public policy, who led the study said that "ADHD could become the leading childhood disorder treated with medications across the globe. We can expect that the already burgeoning global costs for medication treatment for ADHD will rise even more sharply over the next decade"

A WDDTY report dated 18th October 2007 stated that children as young as three were being given Ritalin, and similar powerful drugs to treat ADHD – even though they are not licensed for use with small children, and there had been no studies to see how safe the drug is in with age group. The report said that early studies suggested around a third of small children given Ritalin or similar drugs have had such a bad reaction that treatment had to be stopped.  The reactions included sleeplessness, irritability, repetitive behaviour or thoughts, and appetite loss. The drugs were also found to affect the child’s growth.  Children on an ADHD drug were around 20% shorter, and 55% lighter, for their age. The source was the Journal of the American Medical Association, 2007; 298: 1747-9).
Indeed, the disease-inducing effects of these drugs are staggering. In a WDDTY report dated February 2005, the following side-effects were listed, indicating how damaging the drugs can be to young children who are probably already suffering from a condition created by other Big Pharma drugs.
Cardiovascular
Rapid heart beat (palpitations, tachycardia)
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Unusual heart rhythm (arrythmia)
Heart attack (cardiac arrest)

Central Nervous System
Altered mental status (psychosis)
Hallucinations
Depression or excitement
Convulsions / seizures (excessive brain stimulation)
Drowsiness or "dopey" feeling
Confusion
Lack of sleep (insomnia)
Agitation, irritation, anxiety, nervousness
Hostility
Unhappiness (Dysphoria)
Impaired mental abilities (cognitive impairment on tests)
Jerky movements (Dyskinesias, tics, Tourette's syndrome)
Nervous habits (such as picking at skin or pulling hair)
Compulsive behaviour
Depression/over-sensitivity
Decreased social interest
Zombie-like behaviour

Gastrointestinal
Eating disorders (anorexia)
Nausea
Vomiting
Stomach ache, cramps
dry mouth
constipation
Abnormal liver function tests

Endocrine/Metabolic
Growth problems (pituitary dysfunction)
Weight loss

Other
Blurred vision
Headache
Dizziness
Rash/conjunctivitis/hives
Hair loss
Inflammation of the skin (dermatitis)
Blood disorders (anorexia, leukoplacia)
* Involuntary discharge of urine (enuresis)
Fever
Joint pain
Unusual sweating

Withdrawal and Rebound
Sleep problems (insomnia)
Evening crash
Depression
Over-activity and irritability
Worsening of ADHD-like symptoms

So this is the drug that BBC News so casually thought might be capable of enhancing our work performance this morning. The Today programme made no mention whatsoever that it could cause innumerable health problems as a 'side-effect'. So perhaps we should all be avoiding listening or watching BBC News programmes? Or perhaps they should not be broadcast without a health warning - that listening to this programme could seriously damage our health!
