Alltop, As In All The Top Stories

Alltop, As In All The Top Stories
In mid July Guy Kawasaki contacted to let me know that he had added Diabetesaliciousness to his one website: http://diabetes.alltop.com/
"Sweet! this is cool site," I thought! I’ll write about tomorrow after work.

Then life got in the way, via the cortisone shot from hell and the crazy roller coaster of blood sugars that followed. Days turned into weeks, others wrote about Diabetes Alltop, and I hadn’t.

Many a dblogger, (and Guy K himself) have described Diabetes Alltop as a virtual magazine rack, which is truly what it is.

My fellow dblogger’s had already explained all about Diabetes’s Alltop, you know, how it take feeds from 50 or so dblogs, highlight the 5 most recent posts from said blogs, thus allowing you to scan the subjects with your eyes over the various subject lines. If you see a subject line that tickles your fancy, slide the curser over the subject line for more on the story, and if that really does it for you, click and read all about it.

I decided to explore the rest of Alltop.com – as in “all the top stories,” (which is where the name comes form and is pretty nifty) and was transported to a sh*tload of popular subjects on the web. from ADHD to Yoga, and everything in between, listed in alphabetical order.

Surfing Alltop.com is interesting, informative, and dare I say,"It Rocks!" I’ve become quite partial to Alltop Speaking; Blogging, Health, Humor, Alltop Oddities, and Utterati Alltop.....So far.

Definitely add Diabetes Alltop to your list of favorites, and while you’re at it, take the time to peruse all of Alltop, you just might learn a thing or two about ahhhh…, PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING.

And you'll definitely be a hit at dinner parties!

HFCS - The Sweet Facts Are: We Aren't Confused - YOU ARE.

HFCS - The Sweet Facts Are: We Aren't Confused - YOU ARE.

I’m confused about lots of things in life. I don’t get why people watch the Kardashians or the Jersey Shore and am “confused” as to what the attraction is to shows like that?

The concept of North, South, East, & West confuses me - and if truth be told it confuses various family members as well. In my diabetesalicious my mind, Canada is UP and Florida is down.

I understand the whole “clean up after yourself,” concept, and have understood it since nursery school. Simply put; if you make a mess, clean it up. I’m “confused” as to why BP Oil has such a tough time grasping said concept.

One thing that does not “confuse” me is High Fructose Corn Syrups negative effect on my blood sugar. I’ve done the “Diabetes Math” folks. I’ve counted the carbs, tested my blood sugar, and did the correct bolus for a snack size bag of corn chips/cookies, and was incredibly confused as my blood sugar skyrocketed to the moon.

I’ve called my CDE damn in tears, frustrated with the results of carbo counting for HFCS laden foods and was told quite bluntly: If HFCS is in the first five ingredients of a product, don’t eat it- it will wreck havoc with your blood sugars!

That was 10 years ago, and since then I’ve steered clear of the dietary demon that is HFCS.

I’ve read books, talked with numerous health care professionals, and watched documentaries on the HFCS, - it's not a pretty picture. I’ve written numerous blog posts about HFCS and tweeted facts. Seriously folks, there’s nothing “sweet” about what HFCS does to your body.

I w as mega confused when I start receiving out of the blue tweets from @Sweetfacts (a PR firm for the Corn Refiners Association) telling me that “I’m confused about HFCS” and that’s “it’s perfectly fine if consumed in moderation.” @sweetfacts also sent me lots of links to posts saying HFCS has nothing to does with the rise of type 2 diabetes in this country. YES – I laughed so hard I could barely catch my breath.

I tweeted back the correlation between HFCS being added to soft drinks in 1980, which happened to be the year children started being diagnosed with type 2. No answer on that one.

@sweetfacts @sstrumello FYI - US rates of type 2 diabetes at a crazy rate since 1980, when soda co's started substituting sugar with HFCS

I decided to tweet @Sweetfacts a rather simple question that would ease my mind regarding HFCS. I even used @Sweetfacts very own words. I asked: How does one consume HFCS in moderation when it’s in almost every processed food under the sun?

I asked this question multiple times and in multiple ways and tweeted a few other HFCS facts as we:

@sweetfacts I am confused though, because I have absolutely no idea how one consumes #HFCS in moderation - do tell!

@sweetfacts So tell please tell me because I'd love 2know how you do it. How does 1 consume #HFCS in "moderation,"since it's in everything

@sweetfacts SERIOUSLY? There's no confusion here-HFCS is NOT "a health food" in anyway, shape, or form. it's a genetically modified sweetener

@Sweetfacts FYI,I absolutely support farmers&buy fresh corn@ a wkly farmers mkt. The edible kind, not the yellow dent #7-spawner of HFCS kind

@sweetfacts Here's a question for you. Since #HFCS is in virtually EVERYTHING, how can it be consumed in moderation?

Of course I didn’t receive an answer – and there’s a good chance I won’t.

I also became royally confused when @KSGrains – another tweeter paid to tweet poetic about HFCS tweeted me this:

: @ksgrains @diabetesalic Saying #hfcs is in everything is totally misguided. Best way to eat healthy: http://bit.ly/HR7Bi

Yes, girlfriend sent me a link to the food pyramid - PLEASE!

So I tweeted:

@ksgrains Don’t tell me the "best way 2eat healthy,” I’ve been a type1diabetic since I ws 8& have been working w/nutritionists &CDES for years

@ksgrains Both personally&professionally. The nutritionists & Certified Diabetes Educators I work w/tell their patients to stay clear of #HFCS

@diabetesalic Exaggerate much? lol I think you need a good laugh -- What would Julia say about sweeteners? http://bit.ly/dyz4aH

My response:

@ksgrains NO,I tell it like it is. Julia Child ws a proponent of real food& ingredients& I’m sure she thought #HFCS ws BS.

Ironically, the producers of with the Julia Child wanna-be video and the site it airs on Sweetscam.com are rumored to be funded by those who make money from #HFCS.

I could cut and paste more tweets, but I’d rather just tell you how I feel.

I found the whole exchange and condescending attitude of both @ksgrains & @Sweetfacts to be really offensive.

I find it offensive that people who are paid by the corn conglomerate tell me and others like myself that we are confused about #HFCS.

As a person with type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, I don’t have the luxury of being “confused” when it comes to what I put in my body. My world revolves around all types of numbers.

Blood sugar numbers; carbs, fiber, fat grams and caloric intake. Not to mention A1C, blood pressure rates, kidney function rates, and cholesterol. I could go on, but you all know the diabetes drill.

I (like millions of others) MUST calculate the numbers for every piece of food I put in my body. I, like my diabetes cohorts, MUST test my blood sugar, and figure out (with the help of my bolus wizard the precise amount of insulin needed to cover every piece of food that goes into my body.

I have no choice but to test my blood sugar at least ten times a day if I want to live a great life with diabetes.

I’ve experienced first hand what a processed food product loaded with HFCS does to my body, verses it’s raw sugar counterpart. I have the numbers to back it up – DON’T YOU DARE TELL ME I’M CONFUSED.

Don’t send me to sites with “quirky” videos produced by the people who pay you to talk nice about them,

I’m offended & disgusted that @sweetfacts and @ksgrains have so little faith in my intelligence as both a consumer and as a person with diabetes.

Please guys, tell me how you feel about #HFCS – and tell them to!

And don’t even get me started on the Chiropractor on twitter who suggests pooping 3 times a day to help control your diabetes – he’s full of shit!

But I digress, and will leave that subject for another post!

TSA Confiscates A Pregnant Woman With Diabetes Insulin! People With Chronic Illnesses Need Protection From TSA!

TSA Confiscates A Pregnant Woman With Diabetes Insulin! People With Chronic Illnesses Need Protection From TSA!
So once again, a light and airy Friday post is out of the question, and you have TSA @ Denver International Airport to thank for that.
As if people with diabetes and other chronic conditions & illnesses don't have enough to worry about while travelling and dealing with TSA Security, you can now add having your life saving bottle of insulin being confiscated!

Seems like the TSA Screeners at Denver International Airport thought it was OK to confiscate (and not inform,) a pregnant PWD/M2BWD (Person With Diabetes/ Mom To Be With Diabetes) insulin.
The woman (who's afraid to give her name for obvious reasons,) was travelling alone to Phoenix from Denver to attend a Baby Shower being held for her and her unborn child.

While the TSA Screener informed her that she was indeed a risk for explosives due to the insulin & ice packs she was carrying in her lunch bag, he neglected to inform her that he actually took her insulin. Don't even get me started on how grossly negligent, not to mention deadly that is. Or how expensive insulin is and how her insurance company ( if she's lucky enough to have it,) won't reimburse her because she's not due to get a refill for 30, 60, and or 90 days!

You can read more about this story, TSA's lame statement and watch the Denver 7News video of this outrageous story by clicking HERE.

This story MAKES ME SICK. not only is this shameful behavior on TSA's part, it's downright dangerous!
This woman had a Dr's note & insulin that was clearly labeled - ALL insulin bottles are.
Not to mention the fact that said insulin bottles are clearly under the 3.4 ounce TSA restriction - Like ALL insulin bottles are. Seriously, when's the last time you saw a 3.5 ounce bottle of insulin, EVER??
I'm disgusted and sick to my stomach evertime I hear about TSA's gross errors in judgement when it comes to dealing with citizens with medical issues!
Traveling is a major headache these days, everyone person on the planet knows that!
But add travelling with a chronic illness like Diabetes to the mix, TSA Screeners who don't know their own rules or who just don't care about them, illegal seizure of lifesaving drugs, and pat downs that are more like "Closing the deal date rules" without the the dinner, drinks, and pre-existing relationship let's make our relationship all exclusive, etc., and it's a recipe for disaster.

What will it takefor TSA to get a clue? They've already left patients like T. Sawyer, a bladder cancer survivor who wears a colostomy bag,
covered in his own urine after a TSA pat down gone wrong.
Or this 95 year old
woman with Leukemia who was asked to remove her adult diaper while being frisked at security.
We have rights afforded to us by the Constitution in this country. And as citizens who are patients we need to fight for our rights, and the rights of those who can't fight for themselves.
TSA continues to bend the rules regarding our rights and our dignity under the guise of protecting our safety.

I think I speak for many when I say that as an American who lives with Type 1 Diabetes, I don't feel that TSA is protecting me & keeping out of harms way.

Quite the contrary, I strongly believe that TSA is harmful to my life and my diabetes well being.

And I feel that as a person who lives with diabetes, I need to be protected FROM TSA.

Way Back Wednesday: A Stupid & Rude Question Regarding My Diabetes- And My Fabulous Response~

Way Back Wednesday: A Stupid & Rude Question Regarding My Diabetes- And My Fabulous Response~
This was my second blog post EVER, and was originally posted on 11/12/07
And yes, it really happened to me, and yes, I was angry. I know  it's happened to others in the DOC and beyond.  Good or bad, this is how I handled it.

So, I'm out and about on Saturday with friends and was being chatted up by a guy who thought I was pretty fab, when the subject of my insulin pump came up.

Him: "What's that", he asked, pointing to my belt clip. A new cell phone or blackberry?" Said he, all interested and sweet like.

I decided to be up front with him and said, "it's a nifty, super delicious insulin pump."

He got this really concerned look on his face and asked in a serious tone,
"Oh...,you have diabetes...so can u have kids?

I was seriously steamed, but kept my cool.

I told him I'd let him know the answer to that and other sex related questions
(including turn-ons and favorite positions) if he could tell me at that very moment what his sperm count was.

I told him that I was even willing let him take his beer glass in the bathroom so he could get an accurate number, and even wrangled a few volunteers (my friends Donald and Julian)  to watch the bathroom door for him.

The bartender was even willing to place bets-the whole bar waited for his answer.

Turns out, & I'm quoting his answer verbatim here, " I don't really know of the top of my head."

"Exactly," I stated emphatically- and sashayed away and let him pay for my drink.

No morons need apply here - regardless of their sperm count.

Full disclosure friends: Diabetes has never been the deciding factor when it came to ending a relationship with someone- or starting a relationship for that matter.

Some folks idiots and some are not. I strongly believe that Diabetes weeds out the idiot factor in dating-and I'm so glad it does. Doesn't necessarily weed out the horse's ass factor, but definitely the idiot factor~
