So Is It Mr Sandman Or Diabetes That's Screwing With Me?

This morning I woke up (begrudgingly) and rubbed the sleep from my eyes, except I still felt there was still sleep left in my right eye. Am I making any sense here?

I looked and the right eye and it was clean and didn't look irritated, so I had that going for me.

I showered & washed my face and looked again- NOTHING.
But I still felt like something was in there.

I rinsed my eye with saline solution, and it still felt like something was there.

I put on my glasses (no contacts today for me) and went off on the road to start my work day. All day it's been bothering me on and off. And occasionally It would get a bit cloudy.

Now of course, me being me, I'm starting to freak just a bit! Is this Diabetes messing with my vision or did Mr. Sandman decide to eff with me and leave some minuscule particulate to play Diabetes head games with me ?

Plus, and I'm being completely honest, it's been way too long since my last eye exam - which of course makes my freak-out factor even worse.

So that's what's going on, and that's one of the reasons todays post is short -and late.

Dearest Doorknobs

This is a doorknob - and don't let the fact that it looks so innocent fool you!

These are Gnome Doors - They pose no threat to insulin pumps and are very cute~

These are "The Doors." Their lead singer was hot & you can totally rock out to their songs~

Dearest Doorknobs -
Stop stalking my pump tubing & I at every turn!
Stop tugging - sometimes ever so gently, and other times literally YANKing me so hard that my tubing's pulled until it's taught, forcing my body backwards at least a foot.

But somehow, my infusion set stays put and foils your evil plans.
Except of course for the times when you cause my infusion set to loudly rip with full force that makes my head spin and belly bleed.

It's a delicate dance that you and I have -
I acknowledge your existence and your gravitational pull towards my pump.
The almost magnetic attraction that you have towards all things tubing & pump.
I acknowledge your the opening mechanism to doors, which are the gateways to other places, rooms and locations - both real and imagined.
Doors keep out enemies and cold weather and give us much needed privacy.
And doors have the magical ability to close one opportunity, while miraculously opening up another and allowing opportunity to knock.

I dig doors - especially walking through the Red Door at Elizabeth Arden Spas ~

Doorknobs, you and I have the unique relationship of being old friends and foes.
And I respect that.
In turn and on most occasions, you allow me to walk by and through you sans incident.
Except of course when you don't.

You seem to work your evil gravitational forces when I'm wearing my crispest white shirt, or running out the door to work, or when I'm sans a spare infusion set.
But try to stop me from walking by, past, and through all you want.
Because no matter what, I'm walking through all life's doors and experiencing all the adventures that await - and I'm packing a spare infusion set on my person just in case you decide to act up!

Evidence for Homeopathy

Evidence for Homeopathy
The Science and Technology Committee of the House of Commons are currently looking at the 'evidence base' for Homeopathy. Whether this is just another example of homeopathy bashing (those called to give evidence includes all the usual detractors of homeopathy, Ernst, Goldacre, et al) we will just have to wait to see, but one opportunity this has given the homeopathy community is the opportunity to put together a really quite large, and impressive 'evidence base'.

This evidence base for homeopathy can be seen in submissions to the Committee given by the ARH, and the Homeopathy Research Institute, in particular, and I am hopeful that the positive message - that homeopathy works, and that there is good scientific evidence that homeopathy works - will be published more openly in the coming months.

The Committee, perhaps unsurprisingly, seems to be discussing homeopathy on the basis of accepting what our detractors have said, consistently over the last few years, that there is no evidence base. They are wrong, of course, but continue to work on the basis that if you repeat a lie, over and over again, people will believe it to be true!

Unfortunately, there appears to be little if any recognition of the fragile 'evidence base' for conventional medicine, other than the assumption that there is one. Every pharmaceutical drug is tested before it is marketed. But the evidence of these trials, whilst proving they have an initial impact on illness and disease, does not tell us about the disease inducing effects (DIEs) of the drugs, or the fact that a large majority of them are eventually found to be ineffective, at best, at dangerous, or even lethal, at worst.

This is galling, to say the least. Perhaps the Science and Technology Committee should examine the integrity of evidence base for conventional medicine next.

Fluoride and Water Supply

Fluoride and Water Supply
Did you know that water companies add fluoride to some of our water supplies? And did you know that all local authorities in the UK have the right to ask them to do so?

And did you know that Fluoride was a poison?

We all need to know more about about Fluoride in our water supplies. A good place to start is to have a look at this article - a good starting point. In it, Dr Mercola speaks to Jeff Green, a long-time campaigner against Fluoride, about the many dangers.

Fluoride is a poison, and one that has not been tested for safety. This may sound amazing - but as this article states, it is true.

Adding Fluoride to the water supply is enforced mass medication. Once it is added, it is difficult for anyone to remove it. This article argues that this violates our constitutional rights. Actually, it violates our human rights, and the ability of people to choose what medication they take, and do not take.

And the good new, at least in the USA, is that those responsible for adding this poison to our water supplies, are now being sued.

Why? The problem is a disease called Fluorosis. This article talks about the disease, and its causes, and its close links with Fluoride, added to the water supplies. In effect, children have been overdosed; and parents have not been told about it.

One reason, the main reason, for adding Fluoride to the water supply is that it help prevent tooth decay. Yet it would appear that even dentists now disagree with this. This article also explains the right local authorities have in respect for adding Fluoride to our water - and our ability to sue them for doing so!

But there are other reasons. One recent Mercola article states that Fluoride in the Pineal Gland, which collects the Fluoride in your body, can cause cancer.

The Conventional Medical Establishment, with the support of the Big Phatma companies, are suspected of favouring mass, enforced medication through our water supply. This Natural News article expresses many of the worries from a US perspective, and suggests that there are plans to add Lithium and Statin drugs to the water supply - on the basis that it is 'good for us'. Of course, it is not.

One important, indeed vital element of any healthy diet is healthy ingredients. Water is one of the main ingredient of any meal, any drink.

So how do you find out whether your water supply has fluoride added to it? Write to your water company, and ask them - in the UK (at least) they are obliged to tell you.

The Failure of ConMed - Vaccines

The Failure of ConMed - Vaccines
Although vaccines appear to be the great hope of Big Pharma for their future profits, there is, in fact, no other single area in which the failure of ConMed can be more convincingly demonstrated. The evidence against vaccination is now so strong, no-one should consider allowing themselves, or their children, to have one.

This article, and the attached videos, outlines 49 sudden deaths, 213 permanent disabilities, and discusses the 'silent plan to poison your child - mostly from the Gardisil-Cervarix vaccines. It also outlines how US Presidential candidates are being supported by Big Pharma companies - and how this money is being used to support political campaigns for mandatory vaccinations.

Death and permanent disability arising from vaccines are regularly reported (although not by governments, mainstream media, or the ConMed Establishment). This should not be surprising, as the ingredients of every vaccine contains 'adjuvents' which are known poisons. This article describes how Thimerosol (Mercury) may have been removed from some vaccines - but has been replaced by Aluminium. Out of the frying pan, into the fire it would appear! And of course, these poisons are being injected into our blood stream, and so transported throughout our bodies.

This article thinks that Big Pharma vaccines now cause more disease than they cure. And perhaps this can no longer be seriously denied. More seriously, it asks questions about the links between vaccines and very serious epidemic illness like AIDs, Gulf War Syndrome (soldiers received multi-vaccines prior to engagement), and much more.

At the moment, it is the flu vaccine that is being pushed as hard as any other. But this article provides evidence that it is largely ineffective for most people, but still quite deadly for many. This does not seem to be a good deal. Morever, if you read this article, it suggests that having a flu shot can risk the health of your brain! Yet there are much simpler alternatives. Vitamin D might be a much safer alternative for flu vaccinations. So what are our doctors telling use? Well, this article appears to suggest to our GPs that the flu vaccine is 'evidence based' - so the advice is likely to remain the same. Continue vaccinating people - regardless of the known consequences.

And what we all need to understand is that the failure of Big Pharma vaccines is not a matter of statistics, it is a huge number of personal tragedies. This 13-year-old girl is now in a 'waking coma' because she was given the Cervarix (HPV) vaccine. Or this well-known journalist who was admitted to hospital within 24 hours of having a vaccination. This Guardian article explains the plight of the journalist - who was trying to protect himself from yellow-fever, apparently.

But vaccines are big business, and the source of big profits for Big Pharma. So more and more vaccines are being offered to us. This article examines the situation in the USA - where children can expect more than 60 separate vaccinations now - all in the name of health!

The time to say 'No, no more' is here. And indeed, an increasing number of people are saying 'No', and this has serious implications for Big Pharma profits.

So how can Big Pharma continue to profit from such vaccines? One way is not to offer them, but to force them on us, whether we want them or not. In this article, it is the children of poor families in Australia who are the target. If these families want to receive their 'Family Tax Benefit' they have to have their children vaccinated - what an awful choice this gives parents. Risk your child's health, or lose financial benefits. Your money and your life? And who profits from this?

The increasing failure of other Big Pharma drugs is also an issue, as this article suggests. Antibiotics, once Big Pharma's great claim to medical competence, are rapidly failing. And they see vaccines as taking over from them.

So why aren't we being told about all this? It would appear that however much damage vaccines cause, however many personal and family tragedies are caused by them, the British media is determined not to tell us about it. Is Big Pharma advertising just too important? Or are the Media Moguls, and the Big Pharma moguls, is concert about what we are, and what we are not allowed to know? I understand, for instance, that James Murdoch is also on the board of a large pharmaceutical company.

Sounds cosy!

Ok... You know your a Diabetic when......

Ok... You know your a Diabetic when......
You know your a diabetic you inadvertently cut your finger and instead of saying "ouch, or damn" you response is,"Wow, that's a great drop of blood, where are my test strips and meter!"

You know your a Diabetic when a family member asks "how's it going?" And you respond. "Great my blood sugars have been like 110 and my A1C is 6!"

You know your a Diabetic when you look at the initials B.S. and think Blood Sugar, not Bull Shit.

You know your a Diabetic when you enter a party and immediately scope out where the food is, instead of looking to see if you know anyone.

You know your a Diabetic when you get really angry at someone (usually a stranger) who says:
"Oh, your take insulin and or wear an insulin pump? You must got the betes real bad!"
I swear I just want to punch that person!

You know your a Diabetic when your favorite foods are not just based on taste, but on carb count as well.

For example, I've loved strawberries since I was a kid. And not just because of the taste either, although that had a lot to do with it. I also loved strawberries because I could eat a whole cup of them, at least according to the ADA diet. I also refused to eat grapes when I was little because I could not fathom only eating 12. My reasoning as an 8 year old was, who eats only 12 grapes? forget about it!

Theres plenty more in my head, but I have to save them for another blog entry.

Please post your "You know your a diabetic when..." and we can start a whole Diabetesaliciousness section on it!

'Tryptophandango Brain" is Still In Progress

'Tryptophandango Brain" is Still In Progress

Tryptophandango Brain: WHen your brain is all sorts of wonky after ingesting A Thanksgiving turkey dinner and it's many leftover incarnations.

OK, since I'm all about honesty, I'm still experiencing the phenomena knows as 'Tryptophandango Brain," BIG TIME.

It’s been two days since my last Thanksgiving turkey leftover meal and for some reason, my brain is still tripped out on the tryptophan – at least as far as my diabetes and diabetes blog are concerned. Scratch, that - my Tryptophandango Brain is affecting all aspects of my life, diabetes and otherwise.

I'm still working the increased temporary basal rate thanks to my sinuses issues, which means that I’m constantly sniffling, and carrying an imaginary 50-pound weight on my nose.

I’m working on ½ a dozen blog posts/ diabetes articles, but none are completely finished yet.

National Diabetes Month comes to an end tomorrow and the holiday rush has officially started already.

My work schedule is starting to get busier and that makes me happy - I’m not stressed about work getting busier- I’m stressed about the other stuff.

Like right now, I’m gathering my tax receipts (which stress me out to no end) and reorganizing all sorts of things in my life. All good, but damn if they don’t cause me to stress!

Time goes by so quickly, and when I stop to think about all that’s happened in the past year, it blows my mind!

And then, when I think about what still needs to be done before years end, I come damn near close to stopping in my tracks and freaking out.

Does this happen to everyone during the Holidays, or am I the only one who's feeling like a deer caught in the tryptphandango headlights this time of year??

Homeopathy and Cancer (Healthy Medicine)

Homeopathy and Cancer (Healthy Medicine)
This blog was first published on the http://arh.blogspot.com/ blog, but was removed because of the difficulty in the UK discussing the medical treatment of cancer. With a few minor amendments, here it is.

Can homeopathy heal cancer? Well, no, of course it doesn't. The Cancer Act, 1939 does not allow any such claim to be made. Therefore, it is unusual for the mainstream media, but the Telegraph has recently retold the story of Gemma, and her recovery from cancer

In 2010, my 'Homeopathy Safe Medicine' blog featured Gemma's story. It is, indeed, a quite a remarkable story. It is worth looking at these two articles in their own right, but also the responses to them, mainly made by homeopathy 'denialists', who, rather than being 'delighted' with the possibility that people claim that homeopathy has treated their cancer, do their best to rubbish all such stories. At the time of writing there are over 50 responses to the Telegraph article, and what they demonstrate is that the supporters of conventional medicine have no interest in such stories, and no intention of delving further.

"This is just and anacdotal, subjective experience - it is not science..."
"Homeopathy has never been shown to be better than placebo...."
"I just can't believe in homeopathy... it is quackery"
"It is cruel, because it raises people's hopes....."
"It is just 'spontaneous remission'...."

I know Gemma, and I know that she is pleased to be well. Indeed, she is pleased to be alive! So why do the denialists go out of their way to deny the evidence in from of them? And why does the Establishment support them?

Gemma's experience is not unique. Indeed, it is not even unusual. This is the story of Kaviraj. And this Kevin's story'. And these are just two that have appeared in my 'Homeopathy Safe Medicine blog.

There is much, much more; many more people who have tried homeopathy have found it to be both safe, free from awful adverse reactions, and effective. The whole topic of Homeopathy and cancer does need to be discussed, if only as a matter of information. So here are some recent articles on the subject.

* This article looks at how a homeopathic remedy emanating from Cuba is being used in the treatment of cancer in China.

* Homeopathy even works with animals that contract cancer. See this description of the homeopathic treatment of animals with cancer - and article that includes several case studies.

What this experience means is that homeopaths are being asked to treat cancer. Indeed, many homeopaths are developing programmes for doing so. Take this example - Welling Homeopathy have developed an interesting programme that focuses on the treatment of cancer.

Even for people who want to go through the gruelling adverse effects of ConMed's cancer treatment, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, homeopathy can still be useful in combating some of this suppressive treatment.

So what should be done about homeopathy and cancer? Certainly, anyone looking seriously at developing more effective ways of treating cancer should not be dismissing any form of treatment out of hand - as the law appears to demand. Such an approach is a totally 'unscientific'. Science demands that the world is first observed, and then explained. Cancer patients deserve nothing less than this, unless we are all to assume that Big Pharma drug and radiation treatments are all that are available. There has to be a search for truth, and where possible, the development of new approaches to cancer.

As more people look towards homeopathy for treatment, homeopaths need to 'hone' their techniques and their strategies, not to deny them. And there is promising research evidence that suggests why we should be doing so.

In particular, look at this article, which states that when considering the treatment of breast cancer, homeopathy should be doing this in conjunction with other natural therapies.

Of course, more scientific research should be done, both pure research into the impact highly diluted homeopathic remedies has on tumours, and through 'outcome' studies. As far as pure research is concerned, this process has already begun.

In this study, the Cytotoxic effects of ultra-diluted remedies on breast cancer, 4 remedies were used, with interesting, and positive results.

And in this study, just one remedy, Ruta Grav, was studied for its effect on brain tumours, again interesting and positive results.

So there is increasing evidence that homeopathy has a part to play. Moshe Frenkel, MD., looks here at the evidence for homeopathy in the treatment of cancer in this paper. Unlike the homeopathy denialists, Frenkel comes to a proper science-based conclusion. He says that the existing data 'necessitates further studies'. He says that there are already two conclusions from what has already been done.

* First, homeopathic remedies 'appear to be safe and without adverse reactions'.
* Second, that there may be a role for homeopathy in improving the quality of life of cancer patients.

Yet because homeopathy is a safe and gentle form of medicine, in contrast to the toxicity of ConMed treatment, I would argue that it is the development of treatment that should be the main objective of homeopathy at this time. And much work has already been done here too, especially in India, and especially by Dr AU Ramakrishnan, who has developed a method of treatment, which he calls 'plussing'. He can make extraordinary claims of success over the past 20 years of practice. For instance, he claims a 73% success rate for breast cancer, 55% for stomach cancer, 75% for pancreatic cancer, 32% for liver cancer, 40% for colon cancer, 80% for prostate cancer, and so on.
A Homeopathic Approach to Cancer. Dr AU Ramakrishnan, Catherine R Coulter. Quality Medical Publishing. 2001.

Gemma's story in the Telegraph may be the start of something new and exciting. It means that a national newspaper has now been brave enough to publish a story about homeopathy and cancer. It could open the door for people with cancer, to try new treatments. It could provide an opportunity for the mainstream media to begin telling us more about such treatments. It could start a process within the NHS to compare and contrast the value of different treatments, even to offer them to people who might otherwise die of their cancers, or the toxic treatments that conventional medicine has been offering them now, for decades.

Health Spending brings down Governments, and bankrupts the Nation?

Health Spending brings down Governments, and bankrupts the Nation?

Spending money on health care has become a major political objective for every British government since the inauguration of the National Health Service in 1947. In every election, political parties have positioned themselves carefully so that the electorate would see them as major investors in health care.
The result has been that each successive government has sought outbid itself, and its predecessor, with little appreciable improvement in national health outcomes, but leading to a situation that has brought down governments, and spending on health is now coming close to bankrupting the nation
1951 General Election
The Labour manifesto in 1951, 4 years after the creation of the NHS, appealed to the electorate by contrasting Britain in the inter-war years with the new situation, brought about by the NHS. It spoke about the people’s dread of doctor's bills, and good healthcare costing more than most people could afford. They criticised the Tory opposition, who had consistently opposed the scheme.
"Now we have a national health scheme which is the admiration of the post-war world".
For their part, the Tories stated that "In Education and Health some of the most crying needs are not being met. For the money now being spent we will provide better services and so fulfil the high hopes we all held when we planned the improvements during the war".
Clearly, Labour were not spending enough - so they lost, and went into opposition for 13 years!
1964 General Election
Under the Conservative government, expenditure on the NHS increased, although never sufficient to satisfy the Labour opposition. The Conservatives said this in their 1964 manifesto, entitled 'A Healthy Nation'.
"The past thirteen years have seen improvements in the nation's health greater than in any comparable period. These advances we owe to medical science and the skill of the healing professions. They could only have been achieved against a background of rising living standards and continuously expanding health services such as Conservative Government is providing".
They went on to promise that every man, woman and child in the country would have access to the best treatment, and that their aim was to build or rebuild some 300 hospitals. There was also a promise to "improve and bring up to date the law controlling the safety and quality of drugs".
These promises were not sufficient. The Conservatives lost the election, and Labour returned to power.
1970 General Election
Labour lost again, despite their promises on health. They claimed to have doubled expenditure on hospital building, whilst local health and welfare expenditure "is now running at three times the level of just ten years ago". They promised a continued expansion of training on doctors, nurses and other staff, the continuation of "our great building programme", and inevitably, more changes in the administrative structure of the NHS.
Again, it was not enough, and Labour lost again.
1974 General Election
There is little or no mention of the NHS in the Conservative manifesto of this outgoing Tory administration – so perhaps it is little wonder that they lost!
In comparison, the Labour opposition made many health promises - to revise and expand the NHS, to abolish prescription charges, to introduce free family planning, to phase out private practice from the hospital service, and to transform the area health authorities into democratic bodies.
1979 General Election
After 5 years in power, the Labour Manifesto for this election was called 'A Healthier Nation'. It stated that it would gave 'priority to health', and attacked the Tory alternatives.
"We reject Tory plans to create two health services: one for the rich, financed by private insurance with a second-class service for the rest of us. Labour reaffirms its belief in a comprehensive national health service for all our people. We oppose Tory proposals for higher prescription charges and charges for seeing a doctor or being in hospital. Our aim is to abolish all charges in the NHS".
And Labour tried to defend its record from Conservative claims that it was cutting NHS budgets.
"For all the talk of cuts, the truth is that the Labour Government are spending over £600m a year more on health in real terms than the Tories. Labour will devote a higher proportion of the nation's wealth to the health service and the personal social services".
As usual, the problems of the NHS was also said to concern management rather than the medical treatment that was offered.
"We will streamline the bureaucratic and costly structure the Tories created and give a bigger say in running the NHS to the public and staff".
Needless to say, despite these promises Labour lost the election, and the Tories were destined to be in power for the next 18 years.
1997 General Election
Despite the low priority that the 11-year Thatcher government gave to public spending, the Tory manifesto of 1997 was prepared to defend its record.
"Government spending has concentrated on priorities, not wasteful bureaucracy and over-manning. Despite tough overall public spending plans, real spending on the NHS has risen nearly 75% since 1979". The Health Service is treating over 1 million more patients each year than before our reforms. The number of people waiting over 12 months for hospital treatment has fallen from over 200,000 in 1990 to 22,000 last year. The average wait has fallen from nearly 9 months to 4 months".
The Conservative government lost the election, and Labour was in power for 13 years, embarking on the biggest increase in NHS spending ever seen.
2010 General Election
The New Labour government cannot be accused of scrimping on the NHS for the 13 years of its existence! Indeed, it virtually bankrupted itself, and the country, in an effort to make the NHS, now completely dominated by the Conventional Medical Establishment, work properly! When they were defeated in this election NHS spending had reached close to £120 billion per annum. But it did not save them!
Nor could any political party admit at this time that NHS spending was a major factor in the nation’s financial difficulties! All the main parties campaigned to ‘ring-fence’ health spending even though it was known that massive government spending cuts would have to be enforced over the next few years.
The new Coalition Government decided to ‘ring-fence’ health spending, one of the few departments to be so privileged. And in order to do so the government is prepared to cut other departmental spending by as much as 40-50% over the life-time of the Parliament.
Clearly, government spending on ConMed has become not just a priority. It is now a sacred cow!

Vaccines Don't Cause Autism (?). Listen, you fools (!)

Vaccines Don't Cause Autism (?). Listen, you fools (!)
Vaccines don't cause Autism!

VACCINES DON'T CAUSE AUTISM!

Are you listening? How many more times must you all be told by the Conventional Medical Establishment?

Just listen, and be told!

Doctor's tell us they are safe. The NHS tells us. The government urges us to protect ourselves by accepting vaccines. Our mainstream media stays silent and regularly lets us know about the promotion campaigns of the Pharmaceutical companies (Big Pharma).

Yet still, despite all this, these parents keep telling us that their previously 'normal' children became victims to Autism, and other diseases, after they had a vaccination. See here, fore example.

http://www.nextworldhealthtv.com/videos/vaccination/how-cnn-caused-a-vaccine-story-it-tried-to-crush-to-instead-go-viral-.html

There are so many of these personal testimonies, so many such family tragedies. Many, many more are not known about, because parents accept what they have been told. Vaccines do not cause Autism. VACCINES DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM.

So the fact that the epidemic rise in Autism over the last 40-50 years, a condition unknown until the 1940's, 1950's, closely  mirrors the rise and rise of vaccines during the same period, is just coincidence, 'bad luck', and misfortune.

Autism just happens. There is no cause.

And if vaccines are the cause of epidemic Autism, the Conventional Medical Establishment, would surely not hide it from us? And if they did, our Media would investigate it - surely?

Freaks and Geeks, Diabetes had nothing to do with it!

Freaks and Geeks, Diabetes had nothing to do with it!
OK- It's been a few days since my last blog, recovering from the whole holiday and catching up with friends and family thing.

OK get this: I went to a High School class reunion After Party at the Borgota Casino in Atlantic City this past weekend. Not my H.S. reunion - that was in October, but the other local high school in my hometown. Let me preface this story with the fact that I'd grown up in a small beach town and that my parents had sent me to a Catholic High School 13 miles from the where I grew up. 90% of the people I had gone to kindergarten through 8th grade with had gone to Atlantic City High, and I hadn't talked with most of them since. I was a crasher for sure, but technically I was invited thanks to my old friend from back in the day, Jami. She and I had recently reconnected, and Jami (as well and a few other old friends) had given me both an invite and the courage to attend. I decided to go and check out memory lane. The last time I 'd seen these people the girls had been taller than almost all the boys and and no one had heard of Madonna - as in the performer, not the heavenly images holding the Christ Child in Italian Renaissance paintings

Thinking back to those days, I was so insecure about absolutely everything. My looks; my hair, my clothes, the craziness that was my family, AND the fact that I had diabetes. Diabetes made me different and I hated it. I wanted to be tall and pretty and be able to eat as many chocolate cookies as I wanted. I mean seriously, what adolesent wants to have a spotlight on them because of a medical issue?? Not me. I used humor to disarm my classmates when it came to my diabetes and myself. If I could make them laugh with me instead of at me when it came to the "Big D", then I wouldn't be such a social outcast. At least, not because of the diabetes. The wardrobe, glasses, and lack of grace, yes, but not my diabetes. ;)

Talking with these folks who I hadn't spoken with in 25 years made realize a few things.
Yes, they all remembered my diabetes, but more importantly they remembered and pointed out what good kid I was. Nice to those who needed it, funny and quick witted, and cuter then I ever thought. Personally, I thought I resembled Alfalfa (with long hair) from "The Little Rascals"during my middle school years. But my old classmate Jason pointed out to me that " I was pretty girl with an 80's hairdo, like the rest of our classmates."
Back then, each and everyone of us was insecure about a variety of different things and each of us brought our self doubt with us to school everyday.
We were all so focused on what our own problems (like parents divorcing or money issues, diabetes, asthma, drug addicted siblings, and not having the right designer jeans to wear, etc) that none of us realized that everybody had issues.
My diabetes was my "issue," my classmates were great with it. I was the one who had a problem with it. Each one of us dealt with things that nobody else even considered.
No longer were we divided into the "cool kids" and the 'freaks and Geeks" We were men and women who had grown into adults with careers and accomplishments, both personal and professional. Some had families, others had medical issues, many had both, and all of us lived to tell our tales.
We came from the same small town and had known each other since childhood.
We'd survived the first day of kindergarten; the fashions of the 70's, the hairdo's from the 80's, friendship breakups and makeups, our first game of spin the bottle and first broken hearts, and everything else in between. I had a blast and I'm glad that I had the opportunity reconnect with my past.

And Now For Something Completely Different!

Yeah, I actually took this photo in October, at a children's bouncy ride at a farm that had hayrides, a petting zoo and a corn maze - I kid you not!
Let's just say I thought it looked like anything butt a children's ride.

Am I crazy?

Correction, it's actually the exit/tip (And NO, I'm not even going to attempt a Mohel or Proctologist joke) of the Children's Bouncy ride.

And you know what? I'm NOT typing another word~

Back In the Day, Cookies Were My Contraband Of Choice!

Holidays were tough in our house for many reasons. We had a large family and money was tight, plus we had lots of people with diabetes, which made holiday treats a challenge.

Half the people at the table could eat whatever they wanted, and half couldn’t- it was rough on everyone!

At the beginning of December my mother would start baking and freezing Tollhouse cookies for my brother Johnny who lived in California.

She’d bake late at night, when I was in bed, but I could smell the chocolate and it kept me up at night. I’d wait until everyone was in bed and the house was quiet.

Then, I’d sneak downstairs (skipping the creaky 5th step) and make my way past the dinning room & through the kitchen, and finally arrive in the heater room. We kept our second refrigerator in the heater room, and that’s where all the good stuff was stored.

Before I actually opened the fridge, I went to the cabinet to the left of the utility sink, where the tinfoil was kept, and I'd tare off a sheet.

Then, I’d open up the top freezer portion of the fridge and see the tin of cookies that my mother had just made. I’d take the tin, place it on the washing machine and remove the lid gingerly.

I'd pull back the top layer of wax paper and plastic wrap, revealing the treasure trove of Tollhouse cookies underneath.

It was as if the chocolate chips were looking into my very soul, beckoning me to break all the diabetes rules and give them a try!

My 9 year old self could not resist such a delicious and forbidden temptation.

Ever so carefully, I’d take 3 or 4 cookies and wrapped them tight in the tinfoil, (which was a great way to get rid of the evidence,) and I’d rearrange the cookies that were left so that the remaining contraband didn’t looked disturbed.

I’d grab a carton of milk from the fridge and go outside on the back porch, unwrap and eat my contraband cookies in the dark. Pathetic I know. But also brave when you consider a 9 year old was eating contraband cookies well past midnight on the back porch in the dark of night.

I’d sit on the porch steps, look up at the stars and enjoy my cookies. I'd wash them down with swigs of milk and I'd relish in the fact that I was enjoying something that most people took for granted.

When I was finished, I’d crumble up the foil and toss it in the alley between the garage and the house. Hiding the evidence from any who would look for it.

I’d go back in the house, lock the back door, put the carton of milk back in the heater room fridge, and then go to the downstairs bathroom where I’d wash my face and hands and rinse out my mouth with Listerine.

I’d tiptoe up the steps, avoiding that creaky 5th step and jump back into bed.

The next morning when I tested my urine (back in the diabetes dark ages we didn’t test our blood, we tested urine) was almost always 3% or more, and getting up for school was difficult.

Soon enough, my mom would discover the fact that cookies were missing. You see it wasn’t just me that was pilfering the Christmas Cookie Stash, my sister and dad (both type 1's) were doing the exact same thing I was.

My mom started sending out the cookies to my brother on a weekly basis instead of sending one big batch.

Am I proud of my "Holiday Fail" as a child? No, I’m not. But, I absolutely understand it.

Back then there was no such thing as carb counting or bolusing for extra food.

The Diabetes diet was strict and didn't allow for any holiday treats.

I’ve come along way since then, and I’m proud of the fact that I test my blood sugar between 10 and 15 times a day, and have figured out how to reach “Blood Sugar Nirvana” for most of my favorite bolus worthy foods.

Today, whenever this woman eats a Christmas Cookie, I think of that little girl and enjoy my cookie extra special in her memory.

And Now......A BLAST FROM OUR DIABETES PAST - Brought to You By Kelly's Mom

Things have been a bit hectic in life as of late, my apologies for not posting in a few days!

Any-who, was cleaning out a closet at my mom's (as I'm trying to be a good daughter) and because the crap in said closet was literally making it difficult for the coats to hang properly. Being a child of the depression, it takes much convincing for my mother to throw anything out!

But because of that,.......
